Bradley & Hubbard 1908 dated Arts & Crafts Prairie School slag glass table lamp

Here is a beautiful and rare design table lamp by Bradley & Hubbard, circa 1910, in a bold Prairie School Arts & Crafts design. Reminds one of Frank Lloyd Wright. The lamp measures 22″ tall and is 18.5 x 18.5″ at the shade. It is made of a white metal with bronzed finish and green & yellow variegated slag glass. It has been rewired with modern UL-listed gold cloth covered antique style cord and works great, with a single lightbulb. The shade is signed on all four sides PAT. 08 which is the Bradley & Hubbard patent for their metal decorated shades. Bottom is covered in black felt but I believe is marked B&H underneath. This lamp is definitely a Bradley & Hubbard design. Condition: This lamp is in excellent overall condition, some oxidation to metal on one side and corner that could be cleaned off with a wire brush, but I have left it alone. A few metal clips to interior are missing and reinforced clear tape was used by the previous owner to hold the glass in place, as shown in pics. Again, it is very stable and glass unnoticeable from the outside, so I left it alone. Glass is excellent, complete and undamaged. Metal design is unbroken and complete. Up for sale here folks is a nice Mission Oak lamp from the early 1900′s. It has a slag glass top and was originally an oil lamp. The electric conversion works good, this is a very quality and original lamp. See pictures it truly is a beauty. No chips in any of the glass pieces and all of the wood is in great condition with no splinters or anything chipped off. The pictures don’t do this piece justice when it’s lit. This thing is sturdy. However there are very few scuffs on the lamp. Nothing noticeable until closely examined. Looks like the metal is aged slightly. One small dent in the metal no bigger in diameter than a dime. Metal ballast holding light and chimney in place jiggles. 25 inches from base to the top of the clear glass chimney. The bottom of the wooden base itself is 6.5″ x 6.5″ square. The 4 arms measure 10 on each side at the base of the shade. The shade itself measures 14″ x 14″ and the shade is 6.5 high. The Chimney protrudes 2.25 out of the shade. It has a cord to plug in that is 3 feet 3 inches long from the base of the lamp. This is a great looking piece of history to use in your home. It is a fully functional piece of art history. I have never owned such a colorful slag glass lamp before! This is a really wonderful slag lamp! I wish I knew who made it but neither base nor shade is signed. It is possible one of the makers of the period like Bradley & Hubbard, Miller, Salem Brothers, or Empire could have done it. I would call it prairie style, but I suppose it could be mission or arts & crafts as well. What I can say is the shade has sort of a two tier look with brass overlay on the bottom depicting sort of a country scene. The shade is brass and measures 15 square. It is composed of green, purple/white. And bright red glass….. All granite backed to give the most fiery look possible. The glass has no issues and all of the filigree is just fine as well. The shade sits on a cast iron base with the same bright brass finish. It is unmarked other than for the two matching Bryant labeled sockets at the top. It has been wired with period style cloth braided cord and a nice old plug and comes ready to use and enjoy. Plenty of time to get it by Christmas! I think you will agree that it is well worth it to get it as pictured. All that being said. If you like lamps or need parts please feel free to look at my other auctions or contact me. This original lamp was created in the early 1900′s by the Peterson Art Furniture Co. Located in Faribault, Minnesota. The term Prairie School is specific to a time period (the late 19th century and early 20th century) and falls in line with the Arts & Crafts movement. With inspiration from mid 19th century England, the Arts & Crafts movement eventually spread throughout Europe and then to North America, including Canada, where it became known as the American Arts & Crafts movement. Peterson Art Furniture was founded in 1905 in Faribault, Minn. By John Peterson, who was born in Denmark in 1871 and emigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old. He was employed as a wood carver and cabinet maker in Massachusetts before coming west to work in a furniture store in Minneapolis. In 1895, he joined his brother Andrew in Faribault and worked as a carver and designer with the Hutchinson-Stockton Furniture Company until 1901, when he started a furniture company of his own in Waterville, Minn. The company acquired other furniture factories, including Daisy Woodcraft, North Star Furniture Co. And the Faribault Furniture Co. And at one time manufacturing took place at six locations, four in Faribault and two in Waterville. We encourage any and all questions concerning this beautiful lamp.
