Nice rich original black patina all around of lamp frame. The shade has 11″ X 11″ by sides , total size of the lamp is 20 tall. About oil font: Here is a good user/collector grade example of the Plume and Atwood No 2 size Royal Lamp and original 4 inch shade holder from sometime between 1895 and 1898. The font is for the standard 5 inch font opening. It has the twist lock bayonet mount wasp waist burner experienced users prefer. The lamp has been through the shop and the usual stress lines in the font have all been properly repaired with brass strips soldered in. The original pleasing patina finish on the exposed surfaces has all been preserved intact. The interior of the font is clean with bright brass showing though and has been thoroughly tested for leaks. All the interior working surfaces have had the carbon fouling removed. The lamp is ready for oil use. Everything comes apart as it should. It has the anti-flicker flat wire coil in the draft tube. The wick riser is very smooth and sturdy and the riser rods are straight and true. It has the twist to lift and light gallery. The flame spreader is the correct Royal flame spreader variation for the period. There are really no negatives except for some small marks on the rim of the fill cap, a few small dentlets and a slight no harm push on the top of the flame spreader and, of course, the repaired stress lines. I have pictured these. There were two old solder repairs on the outside of the base, likely for pin holes, which we left. Royal lamps are excellent lamps by actual test of many dozens of types and sizes. They produce a bright light close to a 60 watt old style bulb. This lamp will be a fine performer. We know lamps and have inspected this example carefully for stress lines and other issues that can affect oil use. FYI: ONLY use wicks made for the Royal lamp.
