1910s-25s Stained & Slag Glass Table Lamp with 1910-15 Beaux Arts Base
Height 23 at the finial, Shade depth about 9. Base diameter 8 at widest part. Height of base 14 to the bottom of the socket. Note: I have put a new finial on the lamp, see pics. I love this lamp and have spent hours studying photos on the internet to find similar lamps and to identify and place this lamp correctly in history. The lamp base is beaux arts, it features embossed designs typical of Beaux Arts – a floral medallion encircled by a garland of lilies, a “lighthouse” shape, and the pattern of the circular horizontal base, which screws on to the column. The column itself is hollow and is most likely patinated tin, whereas the circular base and the piece that attached beneath the modern socket are likely bronze or spelter (see close ups of the underside of the base). First, I bought the lamp base from a very chi chi thrift store charity where wealthy people from Winnetka, IL donate. It came with a different shade and finial. The new finial goes very nicely with the lamp’s style; if you also want the old one that appears in the majority of the pics, let me know. The lampshade looks simply beautiful with the lamp, very close to the shape and size that would have been on originally. (The original would be one color, all slag glass, with bronze dividers). This shade is a mix of stained glass and slag. It has four small cracks in 3 different pieces of slag (see pics). And I recently discovered 2 cracks on the small pieces of glass around the edges as well as at least 8 hairline or minor cracks on other pieces. I took pics of the shade with blue tape next to each, see the collage. The lead looks to be all in good condition. I would have to characterize the condition of this shade as fair. Wiring – I bought the lamp with modern wiring (probably 50s). The plug is vintage, looks like spelter, but probably not part of the original lamp, and has been given a paint treatment. The prongs are not polarized (see pics). There is a single socket and I use a 40p watt bulb in the lamp. The shade and lamp weigh 14 pounds. I’m based in Evanston, IL, outside of Chicago.
